The Daruma doll is a traditional Japanese talisman symbolising perseverance and good luck. It is modeled after **Bodhidharma**, the founder of Zen Buddhism, and is often depicted as a round, hollow figure with a stern, mustachioed face. Typically, Daruma dolls are red, though they can come in different colours, and have blank white eyes.
The doll serves a motivational role in Japanese culture. When someone makes a wish or sets a goal, they paint one eye of the Daruma. Once the goal is achieved, they paint the second eye to symbolize completion. The Daruma's rounded shape, which allows it to bounce back when knocked over, represents resilience and the ability to recover from hardships.
The phrase "Nanakorobi yaoki" ("Fall seven times, get up eight") is often associated with the Daruma, highlighting its significance in encouraging persistence.
